Gwen's Put on Her Wings For Maybe Baby No. 2?

Gwen Stefani left her rock star and animal lover boys behind and made her way through LAX decked out in red over the weekend. She wasn't shy about the jewelry either — good times in the security line. While we're used to seeing the dynamic globe trotting Rossdale-Stefani trio, rumor has it that there may be baby No. 2 on the way. We're not sending any official congratulations just yet, considering the source is UK's The Sun, but according to the paper Gwen and Gavin recently found out the exciting news. Then again, just a few weeks ago her rep was busy deny deny denying a second pregnancy. We'll wait for some sort of official confirmation, but we would definitely love to see a fashionable little sibling for adorable Kingston.

Update: Gavin's dad confirmed the great news. He said, "They and the whole family are delighted." So are we!

Around the world with 1,001 foods

Is it a cookbook? A dictionary? A glossary? I've been living with "1001 Foods to Die For" for a week and I still don't know. But someone - we have no idea who, since this book has no editor listed anywhere - had the idea of assembling a compendium of the world's favorite dishes, ones travelers seek out. Often these are the same dishes, like pad Thai and lamb vindaloo, that immigrants bring with them in memory, re-creating and popularizing them in their new homes.

Each food gets its own descriptive, if not necessarily definitive, entry, complete with nuggets of history and tales of origin. Some have photographs, some have recipes. Since these are powerfully motivating foods, if not "to die for," then certainly "to hunt for," the effect is a little unnerving. Half the time you're left with an appetite that's all revved up with nowhere to go.

Chinese snow storms strand 200,000 at station in new year exodus

With new year's day falling on February 7 this year, the bad weather has swept China just as the number of travellers is reaching its peak.

The China Meteorological Administration issued a red alert warning of more snowstorms and blizzards in central and eastern China, particularly around Shanghai, the country's commercial hub. It placed a notice on the central forecast website that said: "Cut unnecessary outdoor activities."

Stallone to make fifth Rambo

The 61-year-old action star has been given the go ahead to shoot another movie about the muscle-bound Vietnam War veteran after the franchise's fourth instalment 'Rambo' took an impressive $18.2 million at the US box office last weekend.Studio boss Harvey Weinstein said: "We're planning another adventure for Rambo. He's been to Vietnam, Afghanistan and Myanmar in the last three movies so we're bringing him back to the US." Film executives are said to be keen to move forward with the new project before Stallone is too old to cope with the tough action scenes.

Hostage standoff ends in Venezuela; gunmen arrested after fleeing in ...

The hostage standoff at the Banco Provincial branch was the longest in at least a decade in Venezuela, and every twist and turn became a spectacle in TV and radio news across the country and in neighboring Colombia.

In the final hours, some hostages inside the bank held up signs in the windows with desperate pleas for help and used cell phones to call their relatives.

Under the deal with police, the gunmen were permitted to leave with five hostages who agreed to accompany them, freeing the rest of the captives at the bank. Police allowed the gunmen to flee because "they threatened to start killing the hostages in 20 minutes," Manuitt said.

One of the hostages who later left with the gunmen, Vanessa Saavedra, spoke quietly and haltingly to Colombia's Caracol Radio by cell phone from inside the bank, saying: "We don't want them to shoot ...

They all bank on Britney

Television ratings show that a major Britney Spears incident attracts viewers to each of the main entertainment news TV shows, too. "All of us sustained a major ratings spike" when Spears was taken to the hospital two weeks ago, said Charles Lachman, executive producer of Inside Edition. "It happens every time with her." It's more difficult to assess the economic gain for TV shows because they sell ads weeks in advance, with rates based on average expected ratings. If the show fails to deliver, it has to reimburse the advertiser, but there is no such compensation if ratings exceed expectations. Suffice it to say that advertisers love the extra attention. "Anything that boosts ratings is a win-win for everyone," said Shari Anne Brill, an analyst with ad buyer Carat USA.

... and the less than lucky

On the flip side, the Spears story isn't making money for everyone.

Hot tea, chili help combat cold

With the possibility of rain mixed with snow Friday night into Saturday, cold-weather foods are on my mind. I've already broken out the hot tea in the evenings. Shopping for teas was a wonderful adventure when I lived in Missoula and could roam the tea and herb room of one shop. Opening the jars with bulk product was a journey, able to transport you to exotic parts of Asia with heady curry blends or to warm mornings at homes with local teas. I'm so glad to see stores stocking greater varieties of both hot and cold teas. You can take a tour of the world without leaving home by sampling the very British Earl Grey teas, dip into Africa for red teas or Asia for white or green teas. The flavors range from fruity to spicy. The perfect wake-me-ups for morning or relax-me-nows before bed. Another favorite cold-weather treat is chili, and Hunter Public Relations, on behalf of Tabasco pepper sauce, sent me a reminder this morning that October is National Chili Month.
