Venison Soup Delicous And Easy To Fix

Soup is good food, especially when the weather cools. It's also good when you can construct it around a supply of meat on hand like venison. And soup is a good way to work that venison into the main dish for even the finicky folks who say they don't like wild game. Many times a deer hunter winds up with some odds and ends of venison. This may be trimmings or just leftovers from cutting the meat into suitable package amounts. A handful here, a couple of handfuls there, and pretty soon there is enough for a stew, soup or some chili. Here is one cook's broad and flexible treatment of the leftover venison situation. Starr Lane of Guy said this also works well with ground venison. She calls it venison taco soup. A couple of innovations in the ingredients make it a main dish out of the ordinary.Venison Taco SoupCut the deer meat, with connective tissues removed, into very small pieces, smaller than stew meat, or use ground meat.

Part 1 of CNN Democratic presidential debate

The number-one issue for Americans of both parties is the economy, and today the news is simply not good. Markets around the world are in a tailspin because of fears of a U.S. recession. So far this year, the Dow has lost nearly 9 percent.

How much money would your stimulus plan put in the pockets of the average South Carolinian?

SEN. HILLARY CLINTON: Well, Joe, I'm glad you started with the economy, because that is the number-one issue. What's been happening in the markets, what's been happening with the home mortgage crisis, $100-a- barrel oil, so many of the issues that are really at the kitchen tables of Americans today and what they're talking to me about.

We have to stimulate the economy. I began calling for some kind of economic action plan back at the beginning of December.

FOOD: Ideas for easy edible gifts

Nuts are nice because they have staying power. Spiced nuts stay fresh for a few weeks, so they can be made well before the holidays. Some recipes emphasize sweeter flavorings, others tend to the spicier side. Allow a few hours for the nuts to dry and set before packaging (think Asian food boxes or glass jars), but active time in the kitchen is under an hour.— Gingerbread family kitThis is a twist on a holiday favorite. You do the hard work of baking the gingerbread people and leave the fun of decorating them to those on your gift list. Bake a variety of gingerbread people (don't forget pets) and box them along with goodies for decorating. Tubes of icing, small candies and string licorice are good options.— Candied citrus peelThis is a classy and unusual gift for anyone on your list.

Government ‘has no strategy for prisons’

Successive Labour home secretaries are to blame for the overcrowding crisis in jails in England and Wales, the Chief Inspector of Prisons says.

Anne Owers describes the Government’s emergency prison-building programme, which has been drawn up to cope with the record numbers, as an "insubstantial and rather expensive liferaft". With prisoners again being held in police cells, Ms Owers is scathing in her annual report, out today, about Labour’s policies, which have led to a big rise in the prison population.

The "crisis was predicted and predictable, fuelled by legislation and policies which ignored consequences, cost or effectiveness, together with an absence of coherent strategic direction," she says. She criticises the plans of the Justice Secretary, Jack Straw, to build up to three "Titan" prisons.

Bar Room Banter: Brady's boot, sports fams and Oscar nods

His career is over! Bring back Drew Bledsoe for the Super Bowl! Or not. As is often the case these days, this is much ado about nothing. While Eric Kay goes Oliver Stone on this story, I'll go Larry King and just sleep through it. Tom Brady will be fine and ready to go for the Super Bowl. But seeing Brady limp around New York City reminded me of the millions of times Kay has trudged into work with a bad back from watching a 10-hour Mr. Belvedere marathon. The toughness he showed sitting in his office chair for nine hours really is the stuff of legend. Like D.C. native Kay, I'm from a tough, corruption-infested area (Rhode Island) and can thusly appreciate his bravery and gumption. Tom Brady, while tough and dreamy, could learn a few things from him. .
