McCain's "Mexico First" Aide

You won't learn much else from Lizza's article. It's ... not one of his best! A classic dumbed-down Remnick-era New Yorker piece--remedial reading for U.W.S. cocooners. Lizza skips over all the wonkish aspects of the immigration debate (like whether "comprehensive" reform will actually work) as if they have nothing to do with the politics, paints opponents as unfeeling racists, ignores well-publicized evidence (e.g., from Carville and Greenberg) that Democrats might have political problems from supporting legalization, falls for the recent Pew hype and generally fits the issue into a comfortable Civil Rights template (moral moderates vs. pathetic bigots). Did I mention that it's a bad piece? ... 10:15 P.M. link

Lehanian ethics: The New Republic quotes the Hollywood studio's new hired attack flack, who previously found work as spokesman against an obviously-doomed initiative designed to tinker with California's electoral votes:

"When they're refusing to say who's behind the initiative," says Chris Lehane, a consultant who handled communications for the countereffort, "the rules of the game are that you can make all sorts of allegations." [E.A.]

Who makes these "rules of the game"? Maybe if Lehane played by more appealing rules he'd win a few.

Germany still wrestles with Adolf Hitler's legacy

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in central Berlin, consisting of 2,711 grey pillars, is in need of repair which will cost several hundred thousands pounds.

As Germany marks the anniversary today of Hitler and the Nazi party taking power in Germany, some have questioned whether so many memorials cloud personal remembrance.

Hornets' derby debacle

WATFORD's crisis of results at Vicarage Road plunged to new depths this afternoon (Saturday) after they crashed to a 4-2 defeat against Queens Park Rangers.

The game was effectively over by half-time after the counter-attacking visitors had capitalised on some alarming defensive failings in the Hornets rearguard to race into a 3-0 lead courtesy of two Martin Rowlands goals, including a penalty, and a Damion Stewart header.

A Damien Francis header at the start of the second-half, which had suspicions of an own goal about it, gave the Hornets hope, but Akos Buzsaky ensured it would be seven games without a win at Vicarage Road for the home side before Dan Shittu netted a late consolation.

Homemade lasagna: Seasoned with family memories

The first aroma that would waft into my childhood bedroom on a Sunday morning was the smell of onions and garlic frying. That scent would wake me up. I would hear the sizzle as the onions hit the hot olive oil in the pan; the sputtering sound of the crushed canned tomatoes following suit occurred moments later. In my parents' home, Sunday was macaroni and gravy day (you might call it "pasta" with "sauce"), and holidays offered the hallowed lasagna.

Relatives would stop by after church with a warm loaf of bakery Italian bread to chat for a bit before returning home to their family's version of this classic. Inevitably, when my mother wasn't looking, we'd grab hunks of the warm loaf and dip it into the pot, blow on it, and devour.

On cue, my mother would complain that someone had left bread crumbs in the sauce.

Democrats Are Hocking Their Agenda As If They Were at a Fire Sale

Just over a week ago, about a thousand activists from the Christian right gathered in Washington to pass verdict on the Republican presidential candidates. At the Family Research Council's Values Voters summit, the values most cherished did not sit well with most Americans. Polls show that a consistent and substantial majority in the US are pro-choice, supports stem cell research and opposes amending the constitution to ban gay marriage. All these issues figure low on the list of national priorities and high on the agenda of the FRC. None the less, all the leading Republican contenders showed up.

The more out of touch with mainstream America they sounded, the greater the applause. "Sometimes we talk about why we're importing so many people in our workforce," said Mike Huckabee.

Britney Spears

If Jamie Lynn starts speaking in an English accent, we're past the point of no return, people. You might as well fit her for a pink wig and torn fishnets. I'll notify Starbucks. My God, how do you tell someone there's two Britneys? I'd rather tell someone their dog died and I was the driver. Of course, I'll deny it in court. Although I'm the only guy in the neighborhood who drives a monster truck with Milk Bone wheels…

Chef’s Secret: Super shrimp Po-Boy

"I ate last night at a new restaurant in Newport called Fluke. I had the most unbelievable, flavor-packed sandwich — the Fried Shrimp Po-Boy. It had some kind of slaw on it and a great dipping sauce.

I'd love to get the recipe to serve this for the Super Bowl at my house. It has to be one of the best sandwiches ever created!"

Tollefson's effusive appreciation of the po-boy sent me rushing to get the recipe for two reasons. First of all, we all want the perfect Super Bowl sandwich and this one sounds like a winner. Second, Fluke Wine, Bar & Kitchen is a new restaurant and sharing the recipe gives us an opportunity to learn more about the place.

Let's start with the sandwich. Po-boy is the name for a standard New Orleans sandwich made with French bread that's crusty on the outside and airy on the inside.
