Local religious mourn loss of two world leaders

As sad as the local Mormons are about the loss of a great leader, they all agree the church will move forward seamlessly.

"He was an exceptional man, an exceptional leader and we loved him very much," Olson said. "We will miss him but the church won't skip a beat."

Suhaka agreed: "The church will not be affected. We believe the church is run by the Lord, and he chooses his prophet."

Church protocol states that, upon a president's death, the church's most senior apostle is named president in a vote of the Council of the Twelve Apostles. Thomas S. Monson, 80, is expected to succeed Hinckley, who was named president in 1995 at the age of 84.

Hinckley's funeral will be broadcast via satellite to all Mormon churches, Suhaka said, and the doors to the Frederick church will be open and everyone will be invited to participate in the service to remember the man they say was chosen by God to lead the church.

What's hot

Dinner was usually a large chicken and sweetcorn pizza or a fry up with eggs, bacon and fried toast.

Then I’d telly-snack on a huge bag of crisps and a family pack of Revels. I was always hungry!

Diet expert Amanda Ursell says: Stephanie was packing away almost 5,000 calories a day. At this rate she’d have piled on several more stones over the coming six months.

I was hugely concerned not just by her calorie intake, but her fat, saturated fat and salt intakes, which were all sky-high.

Explaining that she was eating her way to an early grave was the first step. Putting her on the right eating track while not making her feel deprived and keeping her full was the next.

Amanda suggested that Stephanie stick to her Scottish roots but swap haggis for porridge for breakfast to give a low-fat, low-GI start to her day.

Chase away chill with hot drinks

Oh, the weather outside will be frightful if the National Weather Service's forecast of subzero lows on Sunday night comes through. But hot drinks can be so delightful at this time of year. I enjoy hot teas in many flavors to warm up after wintry activities outdoors. But the real indulgences for all ages are hot cider and hot chocolate or hot cocoa. You can created mulled ciders, but here is an idea that is a bit different. It uses maple syrup to provide sweetness (be sure to use real maple syrup instead of one that uses a sugar substitute), and the ingredients can easily be multiplied to serve a crowd:

HINT OF VERMONT HOT CIDER

3 tbsp. maple syrup, or to taste 3 cups apple cider 3 whole cloves 2 tsp. ground allspice 1 cinnamon stick 3 tbsp. whipped cream, prepared 2 tsp.

How much do families spend?

Back then, most houses used coal for heating and cooking and hot water, and this would cost around five shillings for a ton.

There were no supermarkets, you used to buy your goods at the corner shops, and if you had a garden you would grow your own fruit and vegetables to save money, and of course in those days parents would buy wool and material and make as much of your clothes they could.

Wages were low, around 2.00 a week depending on what work the breadwinner did.

The Inconspicuous Life of Hindus

Unless you usually attend the annual Diwali celebration in the fall or play Holi on the steps in the spring—events to which anyone with a penchant for having fun (and eating good Indian food) is invited—you might easily never notice the large Hindu presence on campus.

Keeping a low profile is a manifestation of the non-interventionist mindset that has enabled Hinduism to survive some 8,000 years in spite of assaults like the Muslim invasions, the Goa inquisition, and more recent encroachments like the Gospel Fellowship Trust India's campaign to aggressively convert Dalits and impoverished tribesmen to Christianity. Although this live-and-let-live philosophy probably originated as either a product of geographic isolation or a defensive tactic, it persists in Hindus today—not due to isolation or fear of ostracism, but because it is inherent in the religion and in the tradition of Sanātana Dharma, the literal translation of which is “eternal natural law." Sanātana Dharma is simultaneously a weltanschauung, a set of spiritual laws, and a philosophy, central to which is the idea that lauding one's own beliefs as superior to other belief systems is unnatural and contrary to the notion that people must progress toward truth on their own.

Britney Plays with Pap on New Year's?

In watching veggies I've noted, in fact, they often look worse than those who eat a balanced diet of all things.

Well, that aside, hope ya feel better Paulie...

YEAH YEAH YEAH!

Nacho ideas for Super Bowl

For many fans, Super Bowl means super food.

This Sunday, cooks in kitchens around the world will be prepping just that.

Some will choose appetizers or sloppy Joes. Some will score with pizza or little smokies. But what is game day without the chips and dip? More specifically: Nachos.

Serving the uncomplicated platter means you're not spending your Super Bowl party over a hot stove. That makes it easy to serve guests and do a lot of the work in advance.

Instead of the traditional meat, cheese, jalapeos and sour cream of nachos, take the flavors and presentation up a notch this year.

Try a Bourbon sauce. Instead of beef, use shrimp or steak. Cook with tequila. Try anaheim peppers instead of the usual red or green. Use barbeque sauce.

Christmas spirit in the Northern Territory

My friend and I were walking around Eva Valley yesterday and we said 'No-one's been listening to us. Nothing has changed'.

We've told those intervention people about our worries, but nothing has changed.

We want our voices to be heard. We want a store up and running at Eva Valley, so we don't have to get a taxi to Katherine to buy food. The community bus is broken down and the taxi costs $220 in and $220 back. When we go to town some of us share the cost of that taxi, but it is a lot of money, even when you share the cost.

Last Thursday I went to town to get my store card, to buy food. When I went to that Centrelink there was a sign 'There are no store cards in the Katherine office until 1pm today.' Centrelink was running out of store cards.

They could only give me a store card for $50 to buy food, and one for $200 for clothing.
