| Catholic school showcase includes some celebration
There are 359 students at the school in preschool though grade eight, Horton said. The school usually picks up a few new students from the open house, especially in preschool and kindergarten, she said. "It's very important not only for people who are thinking about sending their children to school here, but it also gives the students and teachers an opportunity to spruce up and be proud of what we've got," Horton said. In the past year, the school has renovated its after-care facilities with a $10,000 grant from the Caesars Foundation of Indiana, added a new art studio and started a band program, Horton said. There also are new computers in the school's computer lab. Adina Vogt, who teaches technology, said the open house was a welcome opportunity for her to meet many of her students' parents, which she might not otherwise get to do, since she is not a homeroom teacher.
Assembly may rise to just desserts
Another legislative session, another opportunity for controversy. Forget taxes, forget slots - they're so last session. No, for the regular session that starts tomorrow, the General Assembly has on its plate, literally, this question: Should Maryland designate the Smith Island Cake as the official state dessert? Let me ask the question another way: Does this sophisticated state, home to such floury celebrities as Duff "Ace of Cakes" Goldman, want its official dessert to be one whose recipe includes as an ingredient, "one 18 1/4 -oz. box yellow cake mix, preferably Duncan Hines?" .

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The annual Super Bowl Media Day extravaganza invariably features a collection of oddballs masquerading as journalists who attempt to draw attention to themselves by wearing outlandish get-ups and posing inane questions that will elicit the most shock value. It was against that backdrop yesterday that a boy, no more than 8 or 9 years old, was handed a microphone and platform. He made a beeline for Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who, spotting the junior inquisitor, leaned over in almost a grandfatherly fashion and tenderly attended to his question. "I hear you've been a lot nicer this year," said the child. Coughlin recoiled as if someone had popped him in the nose. "Who put you up to that?" said the coach, to gales of laughter.

BYOB with French accent off to good start
Cochon means "pig," so will Chef Giuffi stick to classic French bistro with an emphasis on execution? Or, after time to get their footing, will they develop their decidedly porcine leanings into a more original menu? Currently Chef feels that innovation will come after start-up, but the menu does sport swine influences. The Seared Scallops with frisee, lardons, roasted peppers, fingerlings and lemon-thyme vinaigrette ($12) appetizer showcased diver scallops with a hint of smokey pork belly lardons offsetting the bitterness of the frisee. The Onion Soup ($7), while good, is too overwhelmingly rich to be an appetizer for the hearty main dish offerings. Instead, here's where I'd rather see some house-made terrines and cured meats along the pork theme.
