Fergie Keeps Celebrating Grammys, LC Stays Cryptic

Fergie is already all over the Grammy events. After announcing the nominees at the ceremony yesterday, she was there for the kickoff party last night in LA. Sadly, her hot man Josh was nowhere to be seen, but she and Ne-Yo got cozy on the red carpet instead. Meanwhile, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon looks fabulous after giving birth to twins in October. On the red carpet Lauren Conrad (in a hot little red number, a break from her usual LBD) talked about the season finale of The Hills, which airs this Monday. She said,

"I gotta be honest, I haven't seen the final episode yet. . . I know that something happens in our lives, but I don't know what they're showing. . . Something very exciting happens in my life. I can't tell you what, obviously, because it has to air, but it was a life-changing something."

Paris? Something with Brody? I guess we'll have to wait and see, but that won't be the end since the girls just signed on for another season which you guys seem pretty excited about.

Life of pie

Love pie but don't love to bake? We tried more than a dozen pies and crusts from the bakery and the freezer case to see if any of them measure up against homemade. A couple came close. Calories, sodium, fat, and even serving size vary widely. See pie pictures at blogs.denverpost.com/thefoodsection.

FROZEN PIES

Best in Class: Vermont Mystic Pie Co. Apple $9.9 9/2 pounds, 10 ounces. Two kinds of apples in filling, fully cooked with firm texture. Nice dome, but filling overflowed a little. Pronounced butter flavor in crust. Closest to homemade.

Per serving | 1/10 pie: 260 calories; 12g fat; 125mg sodium; 35g carbohydrates

Marie Callender's Lattice Apple Pie

$7.4 9/2 pounds, 14 ounces

Our second-favorite, but highest in calories and everything else.

Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12

Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Or is everyone behaving? My wife is now looking over my shoulder -- literally -- so I have to pretend that I'm just checking ball scores. See ya in two days. Here's Wild Card ...

Shape up or leave. The same woman lamented that people also won't stop jabbering on her hikes. Name it a "silent hike of appreciation," he says — that'll weed out the blabbermouths.

Firinn suggests they create a guide on how to be a good guest. "This will trigger some discussion ..."

"And the accusations of paternalism," one man interjects. "Again."

"Oh, I know!" Firinn says. "And the same age-old accusations of paternalism. Yawn, yawn, yawn. Boy, that stuff rolls off my back now."

Firinn has gotten used to the criticism because it turns out that labeling people's behavior unacceptable in the Wild West of Web-initiated socializing makes you a lot of enemies. Call him "paternalistic," call him Firinn der Führer — one of the more inventive titles those he's deemed unworthy have come up with — but the accusations certainly aren't going to halt his social experiment.

When it comes to royal loyalty, we know who comes first

With our predilection to follow so much of America's behaviour, will we see candidates for election "preaching" their messages in the next election. That will be the day I stand up and walk out.

In the meantime I would like assurances from church leaders that we will never allow political electioneering in our churches.

Rock and a hard place
After reading the article about train vandalism ("Arsonists and rock throwers wreak havoc on rail network", January 23), I wonder what is happening to our wonderful country. Where have we gone wrong? Have we failed to educate our population to the point where nobody knows the difference between right and wrong?

Several weeks ago there were reports about buses in Western Sydney and on the Central Coast being attacked by rock-throwing youths, causing some bus drivers to consider not venturing into certain streets.

AFGHANISTAN: Aid reaches winter-affected families as deaths top 500

Meanwhile, the Afghan Red Crescent Society has earmarked about US$1 million to ensure that every vulnerable, affected family receives a cash voucher of up to $70, the organisation said.

IDP camps affected

Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in several camps and settlements in Herat, Helmand and Kandahar provinces are feared to have been severely affected by the winter weather.

"[IDPs] living in camps near Herat [city] have suffered greatly from the recent snowfall and intense cold," OCHA's report said.

Aid agencies have agreed to assist 2,500 families in Maslakh, Shaidai and Minaret IDP camps in Herat Province.

However, it is still unclear whether similar aid will be offered to thousands of other IDPs in Mukhtar and Zherai camps in Helmand and Kandahar provinces, where UN agencies suspended their relief operations in March 2006.

Regal King Cake labor-intensive, but worth it

You can learn a lot in the aftermath of a dinner among friends.

I learned, for example, that a friend of mine achieved the lowest score of 600 test-takers on a Psych 101 exam back in college — and that some of those test-takers with higher scores were monkeys.
