Brasch Words

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The man whom the people elected in 2000 to be president was in the temporary residence of the man whom the Supreme Court anointed.

President George W. Bush hosted former Vice-President Al Gore, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and five other Nobel laureates, Nov. 26. This annual handshake photo-op has been an American tradition.

The Nobel committee cited Gore on Oct. 12 as "probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted" to reduce global warming.

Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a UN network of about 2,000 scientists, who have shown that global warming isn't a liberal conspiracy theory.

Believing that it is some kind of liberal conspiracy theory are the fringe right-wing who dominate talk radio and pundit tv.

More Hastings gamblers seeking help for pokies

Once children go to school hungry and there is no food in the fridge and no money left over two days after they get the benefit or wages, then they turn to help," Ms Stockdale said.

While pokies were the most prevalent addiction, people had also become hooked on the TradeMe website.

"They can spend all day buying and selling but they lose more than they sell," Ms Stockdale said.

And one man made weekly trips from Palmerston North to Hastings to spend $1000 on Lotto tickets at a shop he considered lucky.

Hastings Foodbank Trust manager Greta Wham said over the past year, they had noticed an increase in people needing food parcels from gambling.

"We always ask the reason why and the reason given is gambling."

Ms Wham said the foodbank was put in a difficult position, as it did not want to aid gambling but when children were involved, they felt they could not refuse.

Kansas: Governor endorsing Obama for president

Also, his rally occurred on Kansas Day, the anniversary of the state's admission to the Union in 1861.

He began his speech by declaring: "We're among friends here. We're family."

He said he could talk about making politics less divisive because of his personal experiences. "It's a story that began here in El Dorado," he said.

Democratic presidential candidates long had sought Sebelius' backing in a state that George W. Bush carried by large margins in the 2000 and 2004 elections. No Democratic nominee for the White House has won Kansas' electoral votes since 1964, but Sebelius has won two terms and prospered politically.

"Our country is more than a collection of red states and blue states because my story could happen only in the United States of America," Obama said.

Rich Andean quinoa dubbed ‘mother grain'

Whole grains, nutritional powerhouses packed with proteins, vitamins, minerals, carbs and some fats, make excellent foods. They have to, because the nutrients in them nourish the sprouting seedlings that ultimately grow into adult plants. We know many, such as rice, oats, corn, wheat and barley, from the myriad breakfast cereals that crowd supermarket shelves. And when ground into flour, these grains play major roles in baking and in cookery.Less well-known whole grains, such as amaranth, spelt, millet, teff, buckwheat, hominy and quinoa, are still in their infancy with regard to claiming their roles in our nutritional lives.

Radio Talk

Here's the link to the Peach Buzz item in today's paper..

He plays a tough-guy Secret Service agent named Drucker.

"It's a total roller-coaster ride of a show," he told Buzz. "So far, I'm just shooting on a soundstage office set in Dallas. The joke on the set is you don't want to get a script where you're running around outside shooting [exteriors]. That usually means you're dead!"

I watched the episode that airs tonight. Barnes gets a couple of scenes and a couple of lines with Reggie Lee's Kim character, who works for the president.

1/18: Fall ratings bet on black By Rodney Ho | Thursday, January 18, 2007, 12:01 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The fall ratings results for Atlanta radio were especially odd this year because of all the format changes and the shift in population to reflect more blacks and Hispanics.
