Evolutionists At War Over Altruism’s Origins

An intellectual war of words has broken out between two of the world's leading evolutionists. Oxford University's Richard Dawkins and Harvard's Edward Wilson have gone head to head over the evolution of altruism in the animal kingdom, and whether it can have come about as a result of something called group selection. The subject matter of their dispute is social insects, particularly ants, which display a supreme form of altruism in that sterile workers lay down their lives for the benefit of their fertile colleagues in the colony.

Conventional Darwinian theory could not really explain why one individual should sacrifice its own life, and its precious genes, for the benefit of another individual, unless it could be viewed in terms of group selection, when indi-viduals do it for the benefit of the colony or the species.

South Carolina Post-Mortem, Democrat Edition

Technically, Edwards isn't very far behind in the delegate count and could easily make up the difference. In reality, though, he's 0-for-5 thus far in the states leading up to Super Tuesday and has lost in two states, Iowa and South Carolina, that played to his strengths. He's vowed to stay in the race "to give voice to millions of Americans who have absolutely no voice" but I'd be quite surprised if he takes a single state.

Then again, most of us already figured that it was a two-way race between Clinton and Obama. Obviously, Obama gets a boost here from having won — especially given the margin — but it's a pretty minor one since Clinton will almost surely win Florida Tuesday and regain the momentum.

Obama's win was expected and the Clintons have done a good job of downplaying it.

Kidd confirms that agent has been talking to Nets about trade

Jason Kidd has come to grips with two realities. One, the New Jersey Nets aren't very good. Two, their only chance of improving is to deal him.

"I'm not mad at anybody," he said Monday afternoon by phone. "Sometimes, when you ride a wave, you get to the end and that's all there is. That's where we are."

Kidd confirmed that his agent, Jeff Schwartz, has talked to Nets management about moving him by the Feb. 21 trade deadline, but he categorized the conversation as a continuation of something that started last All-Star break, when the Nets nearly dealt him to the Los Angeles Lakers for a package of players that included Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown. The sticking point was that Nets president Rod Thorn wanted Andrew Bynum and the Lakers refused.

While initial reports had Kidd, 34, insisting on being sent to a contender, he said Monday that he realizes there are no guarantees in any scenario.

Campaign 2008

Come February 5's Super-Duper Tuesday, when nearly two dozen states hold primary elections, Svedka is hosting New York and Washington galas to promote its bid to "put a fembot in the White House." Like any good politician, Svedka Grl robs the best themes from the competition.

Just consider the name of her bus: the Straight Shot Express. While other campaigns bring voters to the polls, "I promise to pick up voters from the polls and drive them to the party." There she'll serve the "Cosmo-Politician" and the "Global Cooler." And she'll push some reasonable positions: "Make cocktails, not war," and "Make handbags tax deductible." While she's late to the race, Svedka officials promise that she'll have her Web page up and running soon.

Feature: Pint-Sized Chefs

According to some local youth that cook, early exposure to the kitchen, hands-on instruction and patient guidance will help almost any child become proficient in the kitchen. Regardless of the goal - to learn just enough to whip up an occasional snack or to excel in national competitions - these culinary skills pay off in the home and in the classroom, and will prove useful later in life.

A Growing Trend

Let's face it: food is hot. Food - especially the enjoyment of it - seems to have come center stage recently.

Bookstore shelves bust with cookbooks covering everything from breadbaking to party planning, crafting fancy chocolates to healthy eating. Television shows highlight everything from cooking how-tos to the latest appliances, attracting viewers hungry for the latest recipes and techniques.

The Weekend Warrior: November 21 - 25

If only this were set during Christmas and Santa showed up to save the day! Projections: $5 to 7 million on Thursday and Friday and another $13 to 15 million over the weekend ($18 to 20 million five-day) on its way to $45 million. COMPARISONS

Hitman (20th Century Fox) Starring Timothy Olyphant, Dougray Scott, Olga Kurylenko, Robert Knepper, Ulrich Thomsen, Michael Offei Directed by Xavier Gens (Frontières); Written by Skip Woods (Swordfish, upcoming G.I. Joe) Genre: Action, Thriller Rated R Tagline: Plot Summary: Agent 47 (Timothy Olyphant) is a nameless assassin for hire who is being chased across Europe by Interpol and the Russian military after being set-up in a political takeover plot, although at the same time, he's fighting his own conscience for what he's done.

Despite being based on a popular video game, Hitman may be the head-scratching anomaly of the weekend, being a low-key action movie starring Timothy Olyphant with a simple one-word title that has used a similarly vague marketing campaign to get young males interested.

Daily Blabber Celebrity Gossip Blog from iVillage Entertainment

I loved my wedding dress, and I often wish there was an acceptable time for me to break it out again, as it seems like a waste to spend all that money for a dress you're seen in only once. Which is exactly what Britney Spears must have been thinking when she decided that she was going to put on the dress she married Kevin Federline in and go car shopping!

Britney stepped out with her paparazzi boyfriend, Adnan, this weekend, in her lacy, white (stifle your giggle!), practically backless, wedding mini-dress. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it's worse that she wore it out to a Mercedes dealership or to her wedding. Either way the Britster has inspired me. You will find me at the local Quick Check in my wedding ensemble at precisely 5pm. Be there or be square.

KELLER'S WWE ROYAL RUMBLE PPV REPORT 1/27: Ongoing "virtual time ...

He said he didn't understand why anyone would want to see these ugly New Yorkers kissing. He said that's what's great about Maria; whatever you ask her to do, she does. He told Ashley to leave her alone because she's not interested in her or her "boobie magazine." He said he wishes he could vote her out just like they did on Survivor. -A video packaged aired on the Edge vs. Rey Mysterio storyline on Smackdown. 3 -- EDGE vs. REY MYSTERIO (w/Zach Ryder, Curt Hawkins) - WWE Hvt. Title match Rey wore an outer mask over his regular mask that looked like a Star Trek prop. Should be at a merchandise stand near you soon, I assume. At 2:00 after Edge knocked Rey to ringside, Edge distracted the ref as Hawkins and Ryder moved toward Rey. The ref saw them near him and sent them to the back. Vickie Guerrero at ringside yelled, "Come on, ref!" Rey went for a 619, but Edged jumped to the floor.
