| Cool way to feed seniors
The county is spending $30,000 on the frozen meal pilot program. Instead of making seniors switch to hot meals when a slot becomes available, Kavanaugh hopes that by July 1 the county will expand the frozen meal program to allow seniors the choice. "All indications are we'll probably be enhancing the program because of the client satisfaction," he said. But the frozen meals aren't ideal for all seniors. About 20 percent of seniors who qualify for meals can't use the frozen meals, Kavanaugh said. "There are some fragile seniors that would have a hard time with a microwave," Kavanaugh said. Before seniors get the meals, workers from the Northern Kentucky Area Development District screen them to be sure they can use the meals, he said. Because the frozen meals come only once every two weeks, seniors also lose the interaction of a daily visit.
Archives for: November 2006
Cape Cod and even Florida got away scot-free this year defying the predictions. The 2006 Atlantic hurricane season ends today with a whimper rather than a bang without a single hurricane hitting the United States.Only three tropical storms made landfall, which was a welcomed relief from the previous two years when nearly a dozen hurricanes battered the country. The mild 2006 Atlantic hurricane season is a stark contrast to the record-breaking hurricane season in 2005 which killed more than 1,500 people and left thousands homeless in New Orleans and along the Gulf of Mexico coast. Such a sense of quiet was relative, however, because although 2006 might have seemed tame compared with the devastation of 2004 and 2005, the 2006 season's total of nine named storms, five hurricanes, two of them major was actually right at the historical average for the past 150 years, according to data from the National Hurricane Center.
Another Talley tearing it up at Melvindale school
He's quick like his father and he's a better shooter. "He's a special kid," coach Michael Talley II said of his son. "Of course, it was a different era when I played, but he's better at 15 than I was. What I learned in college (Michigan) is what I'm trying to teach my son, and that's to be consistent. Young players must learn to be consistent. The best thing about him is his knowledge of the game and being a leader." .
Key lime pie without the guilt, or the Key
A friend, upon accepting my dinner invitation, quickly requested that I make her favorite dessert: Key lime pie. While my mouth muttered "Sure, no problem," my mind thought "Uh-oh." Truth is, I'd never made Key lime pie before. So I promptly headed to my cookbook collection to locate a classic Key lime pie recipe, figure its calorie and fat content, and then create a reduced-fat, lower-calorie pie that fit into my lean food plan and exceeded my guest's expectations -- a worthy but potentially difficult and maybe impossible task. Scouring my reference books and food magazines for the definitive Key lime pie recipe not only turned up numerous recipes, but unearthed some general Key lime pie information. Originally, Key lime pie used Key limes (well, duh!), a once-common Florida lime, one not usually found in today's supermarket produce sections.

A.R. Essay
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- December 31 marks the 15th anniversary of the most important event in the second half of the 20th century: the official collapse of the Soviet Union. And January 1st marks the 15th anniversary of the start of a new post-Cold War age with the U.S. as the world's only remaining superpower. The official dissolution papers were signed on December 8, 1991, but so far world media has barely mentioned it - perhaps because, looking at Russia under Vladimir Putin and the other parts of our not-so-brave new world, there isn't all that much to celebrate. 'Movies like "Babel," "Blood Diamond," and "The Constant Gardner" remind us that the diamonds and money also play a significant role in persistent religious violence... .' Russia's reversion to a kind of post-democratic Stalinism is just one of the past year's great disappointments; for all the bloodshed and sacrifice that moved the Russian people and then all of Eastern Europe to revolt against the Communist Party, 2006 only sharpened the pain.
