The French are tiring of ‘Sarko l’Americain’

The French state supports families handsomely, offering all manner of concessions to "familles nombreuses" (large families).

It's popular to criticise the rigidity of the French education system, but culturally France is a vibrant country that displays loyal patronage for the arts, supporting independent bookshops and a particularly dynamic film industry. French TV is still refreshingly high-brow, a contrast to the dumbed-down reality formats that dominate British and US schedules.

And ever since the revolution, the French have demonstrated formidable savoir-faire when it comes to direct action. France produces legends like Jose Bove, the man who dismantled a McDonald's franchise as a protest against globalisation. It still has powerful trade unions. From the Sorbonne in 1968 to the present day, the French know how to strike.

Ashlee's Mini, Mini Tour Coming Soon

Last week we had the amazing opportunity to chat with Ashlee Simpson who was really sweet and fun on the phone. She told us that she is headed back out on the road for her promo tour to showcase some new music from her upcoming album (check out the tour dates here). 10 reasons to cheer Super Bowl XLII

Snap out of it!"

2. All diets are off on Super Bowl Sunday. Fly on the Buffalo wings of freedom. Chomp on a chili dog or three. Extra cheese? Are you kidding? Get extra cheese and extra sausage, too. If you are not clogging your arteries, you are hardening your heart to the full experience. Super Bowl salad? Super Bowl rice cakes? I think not, my friend.

1. The Super Bowl is the last football game of the season. There will be open discussions on Monday mornings at work. You will see your family again. Grendel will go back into his cave until next fall, or at least until the first whoosh of a Louisville Slugger.

Cops, parents head to Britney Spears' home after fight with Sam Lufti

POLICE and even Britney Spears' parents have returned to the tortured star's home, after she got in to a heated fight with her friend Sam Lutfi.

The LA police were not there to mediate the pair's falling out according to reports online at Eonline.com

Instead, they were targeting several individuals for illegal parking, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Mike Lopez told E! Online.

But it seems Spears' estranged parents, Jamie and Lynne, rushed over to her house to make sure she was okay after hearing from media sources their daughter had an argument with Lufti, a source close to the family told E! News exclusively.

The Daniel Pearl Standard

This week marks the sixth anniversary of the murder of my son Daniel Pearl, a reporter for this newspaper. It is a fitting occasion to step back and reflect on what this tragedy has taught us.

I am often asked why Danny's death has touched so many people and why he, of all victims of terror, is so often singled out as an icon of the troubled journey of the 21st century.

My first answer is that he was a journalist, and journalists, more than any other professionals, represent the strength, beauty and vulnerability of an open society. When an unarmed journalist is killed, we are reminded of both the freedoms that we treasure in our society, and how vulnerable we all are to forces that threaten those freedoms.

But this still does not explain the attention given to Danny's tragedy.

Companies are all different," said Kevin Martin, executive director of the association. "Some will write a homeowner’s policy no matter what dog you have. Some will not even write one depending on the type of dog. Some will write a policy and give you one free bite.

"If the dog attacks someone, nine times out of 10, the policy will be canceled after the attack."

Martin said insurers believe people who don’t own dogs should not face higher costs because some homeowners choose to keep dog breeds that statistically are more likely to bite. And with more than 2,000 companies licensed to write property insurance in Illinois, any homeowner should still be able to find coverage, he said.

Two large Illinois-based insurance companies, State Farm and Allstate, both said they will write policies regardless of a dog’s breed.
