| Readying for school
Every year, as a result, school districts, including these two largest school divisions in Western Virginia, leave state money on the table. Right now, the Virginia Department of Education sets aside money to help make preschool available to almost 19,000 Virginia 4-year-olds eligible for free lunch. Almost one-third of those spots aren't filled, according to Mark Allan, director for elementary instruction at the department. Some districts say they can't afford to pay for their share of the pre-kindergarten programs. Other districts, such as Roanoke County, say they don't have enough room in school buildings to serve all of the eligible children. That has some in the Virginia General Assembly questioning Kaine's proposal. In Roanoke, which has more at-risk 4-year-olds than anywhere else in the region, city school officials are having a difficult time recruiting eligible children into the program, said Cundiff, the school system's director for exceptional student education.
Chris Defends Gwyneth's Honor
After her quick trip to the hospital on Tuesday, Gwyneth Paltrow was out and about in NYC again yesterday. We're glad to see that she's feeling better but unfortunately her husband Chris Martin had a not-so-friendly encounter with the paparazzi when he was helping Gwyn into the car after leaving Mount Sinai. Chris obviously wasn't happy with the photographers swarming his wife, and started a fight with one of them. Not exactly the nicest way to see a rare moment when Chris and Gwyn are spotted in public together, but luckily nobody was seriously injured and we're happy Gwyneth is back on her feet again. .

THEY like it spicy down here in South Carolina. Locals pour hot sauce on their catfish, on their grits, even on their greens. Their politics is spicy too. Charleston, a city with some of the richest and poorest people in the state within spitting distance, has a political scene "as gothic as New York City," a local journalist says. Some folks who live in the historic mansions in Old Charleston actually commute to New York regularly. Meanwhile North Charleston has pockets of desperate poverty, and there are people living in run-down trailers not far outside town. The polls are open today in a state that has once again reminded America of its reputation for hard-ball politics. After all the antics of the past week, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards are in the hands of Democratic primary voters.

I have tried everything ever suggested for hot flashes, but until now have gotten relief only from hormones (HRT). I recently started taking Pycnogenol and have noticed a marked improvement. I stopped HRT about eight months ago and have suffered an average of two or three hot flashes per hour since then.
High Schools - St. Augustine runs to victory
Then again, you don't get to 657 career wins (second most in South Jersey history) without being able to change on the fly. And the key ingredient in Rodio's up-tempo style, freshman Isaiah Morton, showed everyone why the veteran coach has no fear in putting the team into the hands of the 5-6 point guard. Morton sliced and diced, and bombed, his way to a game-high 30 points. He hit on dizzying drives to the hoop, he converted five three-pointers, at least a couple from NBA range. And, when the game was still undecided late in the third quarter, he scored his team's next 15 points. When that spurt ended, his Hermits had forged to a 51-41 lead with 3:33 left. "He does some things that are great," said senior Josh Thompson, who added 12 points. "I see him do it in practice all the time.
So thin her bones stuck out
It is a description that can no longer aptly be used to describe the leggy beauty, who walked away with the Miss America 2008 crown on Saturday night. Miss Haglund, an aspiring Broadway singer, told the Deseret Morning News of her terrible struggle with anorexia which was at its worst when she was just 16. At the time, she ate only 'tiny portions' of food and was so thin that her collar bones stuck out. The lack of nutrition also caused her heart rate to drop and relationships to suffer. 'I was diagnosed at 16, but I probably really began having problems with it when I was about 14,' she told The Detroit News. She points to pressure trying to conform to an idealised body shape while she was a ballet student. 'I would feel fatigued walking up six steps,' she said.
Father-son hunt with flintlock makes smoke and memories
After Pop-Tarts and coffee (the breakfast of champions, I'm told), we made our way to the blind. Sam loaded his rifle and primed the pan. Now for the next phase, the waiting. After about 45 minutes, I'm thinking about what our next strategy might be. As my mind wandered, I felt a tap on my arm. Sam moved his head to an opening in the trees across from us. Our quarry had just arrived. The doe was out of Sam's range, so we had to hope it would come toward us, then move toward the lake. During this wait the mental checklist is being acted out. Can you see the sights? Did you prime the pan? Do you have a good rest? Then the final question. Can you make that shot? Remember your breathing. Phoosh. Boom. Smack. Three beautiful sounds and then the best smell on earth as a cloud of white smoke drifted back over us.
