Steve Alexander: Privacy policy makes it hard to play detective

Q Someone has discovered my password on my Yahoo e-mail address and used it to distribute some information that was very private. I have contacted Yahoo because I want to find out who did this, but it's very difficult to talk to a live person there. Could Yahoo provide me with the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the computers that have viewed my e-mails? If I could find that information, I would definitely file a lawsuit.

DEE OXLEY, HURRICANE, W.VA.

A The best thing to do is change your password so this doesn't happen again. After signing into Yahoo Mail, click "options" and select "account information." You'll have to enter your current password again to get to the "ID card" screen, where you can change the password to something else.

But tracking down the person who did this would be difficult.

Britney Spears Bolts Sam Lufti, Turns Parents Away At Door

Britney Spears has been told she can speak to her children on the telephone.

The 'Toxic' singer - who hasn't seen her two sons Sean Preston, two, and 16-month-old Jayden James for more than three weeks after she refused to return them to ex-husband Kevin Federline - is forbidden from visiting her children indefinitely, meaning her only access to them is via phone calls.

Court documents released Tuesday (28.01.08) revealed: "Spears is to have telephonic contact with the minor children. All prior orders remain in full force and effect."

High court takes up foreclosure notification

Gupta was arguing on behalf of Joyce Griffin, the Pasadena resident who says she first found out her home had been foreclosed in May 2006, when the new owner tacked a handwritten note to her front door.

The foreclosure trustees, the Bethesda firm of Bierman, Geesing and Ward LLC, sent Griffin the required letters, but all certified mail came back as unclaimed.

Jacob Geesing, who represented the firm, said that's what happens "99.9 percent of the time." Homeowners delinquent in their payments read the notification letters and purposely ignore the certified versions, he said.

"We have boxes of it in our offices, stacks of it," Geesing said.

Griffin, who still occupies her foreclosed home with her 8-year-old daughter, said she never received any of the letters.

Radio review

The BBC and the Closet (Radio 4) was a documentary within a documentary; a slice of British social and sexual history told through the story of a radio programme that was a while in the making. In 1963, Colin Thomas, a BBC trainee, began working on a programme that would consist of gay men talking anonymously about their lives. "To edit them together, just that," explained Thomas. "[Before] it was always experts rather than gay men themselves."

Two years later, the programme was finally broadcast, after many a tussle behind the scenes. Internal BBC memos made up one set of voices in the documentary, and these appeared, at the very least, ludicrous in retrospect. One high-up executive worried that "marginal cases" on hearing the subject treated sympathetically might "cross the frontier" or have their interest awakened enough "disastrously to tip the scale".

Britney triumphs at NRJ awards

SexyBack singer Justin Timberlake won International Male Artist of the Year, while Canadian star Avril Lavigne was crowned International Female Artist of the Year.

Amy Winehouse, who was nominated for International Revelation of the Year and International Album of the Year, was due to perform at the star-studded ceremony but was forced to pull out after entering rehab for drug addiction last week.

Lebanese-born Grace Kelly singer Mika, who wore a shocking pink jacket to the ceremony, picked up the International Revelation of the Year.

Michael Jackson, Celine Dion and Kylie Minogue all received the NRJ Award of Honour for their contribution to music.

Nominees for the NRJ Awards are chosen by French radio station NRJ.

Listeners can then vote online for their favourites.

Other Fug Fixes

I know, you guys are probably sort of sick of hearing us yap about cheesy television shows you likely ignore but we love for inexplicable -- well, totally explicable, but maybe only to us -- reasons. But hear me out: I was way behind on my episodes, so I didn't realize that back in November, their rogue costumer struck again.

Ahoy, Jay Mohr! First of all, what are you even doing on Ghost Whisperer? Don't you usually play a fast-talking jackhole, as opposed to the fast-talking family-friendly academic you're playing here? Granted, your snarky comments are becoming the show's only bright spot, but it's still really jarring to see you doing gentle weekend television and spewing stuff about the occult and the spirit world and Chinese takeaway instead of cussing out some poor schmoe.
