With more than 20 samples of chili available, and three microbreweries serving cold beer, Barrie residents were able to warm up this weekend while filling their bellies and supporting Easter Seals. The inaugural Chili and Beer festival saw hundreds of residents pour into the Southshore Community Centre over the weekend to sample chili made by local restaurants and businesses. "It's a great chance to support Easter Seals and the local restaurants and breweries," said Charlene Myke, Easter Seals' district manager. "It's also a great thing for a wintry day." While the overall goal is to raise money for the Simcoe County and Muskoka North chapter, Myke said the big thing this year was to introduce residents to the event and get them excited and talking about it for next year.

Tourists invade Tibet
The project got underway in earnest in 2001 and the train began running in July 2006, on a specially designed track to protect the delicate permafrost that lies under much of the last third of the rail line. According to government statistics, 3.2 million tourists visited Tibet in the first nine month of this year, an increase of 67 per cent over the same period in 2006. The figure — 2.9 million Chinese tourists and 326,000 from overseas — is 710,000 more than the total number of visitors for all of 2006. "There's been a dramatic increase in tourism generally since the opening of the railway," said Kate Saunders of the Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet. "It's been particularly acute at the major sacred sites . . . the sites that are most important to Tibetan heritage." In addition to the 7th century Potala Palace, tourists in Lhasa pack the Jokhang Temple Monastery, the most sacred of Tibet's temples, and Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama's former summer palace.
