Slow cookers: Fast forward to dinner

Several manufacturers offer programmable slow cookers. When cooking time is up, the pots automatically shift into "warm" mode - the perfect solution to an eight-hour recipe and a 10-hour workday. "Auto-shift" pots cook at high for the first hour to lift the food's temperature out of the danger zone, then automatically shift to the low setting.

Good-looking stoneware inserts go straight from the slow cooker to the table. And in addition to traditionally styled pots with twining vines and flowers, you'll find sophisticated stainless steel models.

Slow cooking also has gotten a boost from new supermarket products aimed at streamlining prep time and cleanup. Slow Cooker Helper from Betty Crocker and frozen Crock-Pot Classics from Banquet eliminate the need to peel and chop vegetables.

Cathy Thomas' top five dishes from 2007

Check your food guilt at the door. All of the selections for my 2007 favorites are on the decadent side.

Don't get me wrong. I love lean dishes; in fact, I like steamed broccoli. I relish a simple broth bubbling with minced ginger, wilted pea shoots and shiitake mushrooms. And a just-picked organic apple rings my bell.

But the dishes on the '07 list are what I consider comfort fare for company. Cozy yet elegant, these are the kind of recipes that I'm more likely to tackle on weekends when I have more time to cook and hungry guests to feed. There are two desserts, one entre, a killer sauce for fish, and an easy-to-prepare side dish made in the slow cooker.

And to be honest, it's a little crazy for me to list just five dishes. If it was accurate, it would include at least 50 2007 favorites.

Shooting yields no charges: Grand jury determines charges against off ...

It just depends how deep you want to look into anything versus how much you just want to believe what they tell you.I post police activitie and tie ignorance and apathy together all the time. It is a common denominator I cant ignore, because it keeps coming up. Maybe i hold them to a higher standard than you do. Defend themselves??? At Columbine that is ALL they did.Everybody out here knows that. They defended the killers because there was parents all over the place trying to get in . People layed bleeding to death for 4 hours and more because police cordoned off area so nobody could help. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. And they didnt do ANYTHING but get in the way. At Platte Canyon they acted like they attemmpted a rescue and again only defended themselves. They carry guns badges and the right to shoot to kill bad guys, and if they dont want to do that ,.

Chelsea to hand over dossier in Essien defence

Derby's players were more fussed than my players, demanding the red card." Despite comments from some quarters that he has only tinkered with the set-up inherited from Jose Mourinho, Grant added that he has had to change Chelsea's style because the counterattacking favoured by his predecessor is becoming outdated. "Three years ago one-third of the goals in the world were from counter-attacking and last year the figure was down to 20% and it will go down further," he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson will not contest the FA's misconduct charge for verbally abusing the referee Mark Clattenburg during his side's 1-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers last weekend. But the Manchester United manager launched a withering attack on the standard of officiating this season.

Ferguson said: "Keith Hackett [the referees' chief] had a summer conference and he made a promise that tackles with a raised foot off the ground, or from behind, would be a red card.

Five diminutive players who aren't short on talent

Maurice Jones, 5-6, Saginaw Arthur Hill: Another sophomore who receives more attention because he plays for a state-ranked team in a high-profile conference (Saginaw Valley). Most know how good Jones is and that's good and bad. It's good because he doesn't have to prove himself every game. It's bad because there are expectations and sophomores, no matter how good they are, are inconsistent.

5. Vonn Jones, 5-10, Hartland: Wait for this Jones to have a breakout campaign next season. Hartland could make some noise this season and win a district title, but the Eagles are a young team. Jones, a transfer from Saginaw Arthur Hill, is still growing physically, and also mentally within the framework of this team.

Edwards speaks of economic hope

Democratic presidential candidate draws a large crowd at Teamster hall.

Kathleen O'Dell
News-Leader

Presidential candidate John Edwards' covenant with the working and middle class resonated with the more than 1,000 people who jammed an auditorium to see him Monday in Springfield.

Edwards drew applause and cheers of support as he hit on his keystone issues: creating jobs, enacting trade deals that help U.S. workers, universal health care, support for education and teachers, and more funds to help college-bound students.
